What I didn't bank on was the determination of the RMT, and so the inevitable Tube strike was to go ahead from Monday night through to the following Wednesday eve. Nightmare! How do you travel around easily without the Tube when trying to get to Tooting Broadway? Aargh!
Wait a minute London Waterloo? On a Tube strike day! Have you seen how crowded the platforms get on the trains when there's no Tube? There has to be a better way.
I could drive to Guildford, find a parking space (that's a laugh in itself!), catch the train across to Wimbledon and then change to Tooting, but Wimbledon is the end of the District Line Tube, so all those commuters will be on the rail platforms, I may not get on the train! Now as the saying goes there are two things you can't avoid in life: Death and taxes!. And what am I doing? singing at a funeral…On to route 3 exploration.
What other routes come into Tooting? Answer, 1. It's First Capital (through London Bridge to Tooting) or Southern Rail route (through Wimbledon.) The only way to London Bridge from Farnborough? via Waterloo and Tube; and to Wimbledon from Farnborough? Via London Waterloo ( see what I said earlier). OK, call the Funeral Directors to get ideas.
FD: "There's a Tube strike?"
Me: ah uh.
FD: that's a bit of a problem.
Me: you don't say? Where are you based?
FD: we're in Carshalton
Me: how far's that from Tooting
FD: about 5 miles
Me: OK thanks for the info and I'll look at other options.
FD: Have you thought of driving?
Me: do you have any idea what the M3, M25 and inner London are like to drive in in a normal peak hour, let alone on a Tube strike day?... I'll look at other options.
Back to national rail. Is there a station at Carshalton and what others are nearby? Finally I find Mitcham Eastfields (1.5 miles from the church) is on the Sutton line out of Waterloo, but it stops at Clapham Junction so I miss Central London. OK, so what are the timings. The only connection I can get arrives at 08:07. Sorted!
I leave home at 06:20 get on a train to Clapham Junction, change there for a train to Mitcham Eastfields arriving at 08:07, then using my God given transportation, I walk to the church in 30 mins, arriving at 08:35. I'm much happier arriving 1hr early rather than late. Now I just pray it doesn't rain!
