What a wonderful memorial service, it made me think perhaps this is one of the best ways to do it so to speak. The deceased had been cremated previously in a small private service. This memorial service was arranged completely by the family and so they had less costs in funeral arrangements. The family produced their own personal order of services, flowers etc.
As it turned out, the songs I was asked to sing was the same selection of music used at the deceased's spouse's funeral some 12 years ago. There were special memories attached to each piece and I found out that 'You are my heart's delight' was serenaded by husband to wife constantly during their 52 years of marriage. There were many chuckles and reminiscing sighs throughout the speeches and yes, some of the songs brought tears to eyes (not because of my singing I might hasten to add).
The final piece 'Heart's delight' was sung while people exited. The family went to a private internment before joining everyone for the wake, but the others in the congregation remained to hear the final strains of the song. It was a beautiful service and a lovely afternoon singing some wonderful music and giving pleasure and special memories to people. It's times like this that I love my job.
